The WEINRIEDER estate lies in the centre of the Weinviertel region. Its situation on prime south- and south-west-facing hillsides and the  loam soil ideally suited for wine growing are the basic conditions for high quality wines.  The best known named vineyards – Birthal, Kugler, Schneiderberg, Hohenleiten und Bockgärten have long been known for their high quality.

The Weinviertel comprises an area of app. 16.000hectares of vineyards, making it the largest and most interesting wine growing area in Austria.  It contains three quarters of all the picturesque ‘Kellergassen’ (lanes of winecellars built into the hillside).

Kleinhadersdorf/POYSDORF

Kleinhadersdorf near Poysdorf  is right in the heart of the Weinviertel, 50 km north of

Vienna, on the road to Brno in the Czech Republic.  The area is famous for providing the top wines for the production of Austrian sparkling wines (Sekt) as well as being an important centre for the production of the Grüner Veltliner.

Wine growing was first mentioned in records of 1194 – and today gives the landscape  its significant appearance.  You can see various historic places in Poysdorf ; the town is also the starting point for signposted walks and cycle rides through the vineyards.

The WEINRIEDER estate is  to the west of Poysdorf in Kleinhadersdorf.  Here too the vines have a big influence on how the village looks at different times of the year.

The Rieder family’s history has also been dominated for many years by wine growing.  In the area everybody refers to  the family as WEINRIEDER.

Our Philosophy for Vineyard and Cellar

  • a traditional way of growing wine – protecting ‘useful insects’, keeping the vineyard green..
  • strict limiting of quantity through cutting back and thinning – ie pruning off grapes in the summer to leave only one bunch  per shoot
  • careful handling of the grapes during harvesting
  • gentle crushing of the grapes
  •  no addition of sugar – the sugar content is that in the grapes themselves
  • cool fermentation in steel vats is a guarantee for brilliant wines
