You
can approach wine from two directions; on the one hand from the academic
perspective – cold, impartial and analytical. On the other hand with
suitable respect for the abilities of the winemaker, whose job, amongst
other things, is to deal with the caprices of nature. If you can manage
to combine both approaches you can easily be infected by the enthusiasm
generated by some of the really gifted artists amongst the vintners. One
of the most prominent personalities is Friedrich Rieder, long since known
as “WEINRIEDER”…………..

“…when you taste his wines , you understand why he is so successful

“…his Veltliner Schneiderberg 2000 is racy with a fine peppery
flavour often lacking in modern Veltliners. The Veltliner Alte Reben
(Old Vines) is characterised by its density and tast of

His motto: Quality
WEINRIEDER ESTATE
A
few kilometres west of Poysdorf, in Kleinhadersdorf, we meet Fritz
Rieder who is known as „WEINRIEDER“ beyond the borders of Austria. He
reached international renown in recent years especially with his dessert
wines which have a sweet/acid balance that makes them unique. At first
it was his Eiswines which founded his reputation as producer of dessert
wines in the Weinviertel, then his Trockenbeerenauslesen became famous
as well as dry white wines of a particular intensity. “I want to make
wines without fuss but with substance,” WEINRIEDER explains and adds
that he is glad that he lives in the Weinviertel. “The Weinviertel’s
position is not yet a top one,” he thinks. “ But I would not like to
change places with wine growers in the Wachau or Styria because they
have already reached their peak whereas we are still approaching it.”
Most important to him is that his wines are ‘natural’ and without
additives, they have to have ripened naturally and have substance and
they have to be unmistakably his. Selection, low yields and a late
harvest are essential. “I use a minimum of technology to differentiate
myself from the New World wines” he says with conviction. Fritz Rieder
makes wines which improve with keeping, they are authentic, alive and
characteristic of the Weinviertel yet with a clear character of their
own: a lot of fruitness together with a racy acidity. He only produces
white wines: Gruner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay, Riesling,
and Welschriesling. There is one exception: a St. Laurent Eiswein.
You should try the 2003 Gruner Veltliner Alte Reben which has en
enormous density in the nose. A hint of apple, a touch of peach, herby
and slightly peppery; on the palate they blend to a medley of white
pepper, ripe apple, peach, apricot and a slight hint of minerals. As an
aftertaste there are hints of citrus fruit which – together with its
essence of sweetness – provide enormous length. Store a few bottles and
wait and see how this wine will develop in a few years’ time!

Excerpt from a discussion on the Internet-Wine Forum in Germany:
1st
Speaker (Alfred H.)
“Yesterday I tasted a Riesling which made me wonder whether in 10 years
of drinking Riesling I had ever come across something as good. I think
not. I am talking about a Riesling 2000 from the Weinviertel, grower
Friedrich Rieder, called Bockgärten II, 15.3%Vol. In the glass the
wine is a golden colour and indicates through its brilliance and the way
in which it clings to the glass what powerful character is contained
within. On the nose apricot and peach aromas, the alcohol well
integrated. The taste is one of a whole basket of exotic fruits and
excellent balance between sweetness and acidity. I can only advise every
Riesling-fan, if he has the chance to get hold of this wine, Buy it.”
2nd
Speaker
(Mario Scheuermann, Wine Journalist)
„I
know this wine very well. One of the very best Austrian Rieslings of
that vintage; and it’s from the Weinviertel!)
1st
Speaker
“I
would like to stress the fact that I am neither related to the Rieders
nor being paid by them.”
2nd
Speaaker
“The
wine has already been on offer in Austria. In February, Friedrich
Rieder wants to present it for the first time in Germany, at the
Weinsalon Spring
Exhibition in Hamburg. I just hope he’ll have enough bottles left by
that time. For me, the man and his estate have been THE Number One
in that area for some time.”
Friedrich
Rieder,
when he was sent a copy of this dialogue:
“These comments give me personal pleasure in addition to the
business success.”

WEINRIEDER is being
served in the world’s best restaurant.
Following on from their
triumph in the US, in Wolfgang Puck’s ‘Pago, the estate from Poysdorf has
succeeded in achieving another hit in the export market. The
Weinviertler vintner Friedrich Rieder was successful in introducing his
product onto the wine list of the famous British restaurant ‘The Fat
Duck’.
This latest sale to the
top class restaurant near London means enormous prestige for Weinrieder.
For the next season the selected wines are being served as part of the
‘daily tasting menu’. Quite apart from the financial aspect - the real
value lies in the fact that these wines are being presented on an
international stage. Friedrich Rieder sees it as a brilliant opportunity
for the further developing of his export market. ‘This is also a great
thing for the Weinviertel as a whole whose image we were able to boost
again’ comments the successful vintner.
A short time ago, ‘The
Fat Duck’ was voted the ‘best of the best’ by 600 international gourmet
critics who tested 50 3-star Michelin restaurants from all over the world.
Heston Blumenthal, 40 years old, owner and chef, famous in the
international restaurant scene for his creativity and culinary skills won
its legendary reputation as ‘the world’s best restaurant’. He is equally
famous for his presentation skills at international gourmet festivals and
for his innovative approach to culinary development. Queen Elisabeth has
awarded him the ‘Order of the British Empire’. The Weinrieder estate
consider themselves - indirectedly - honoured through this new businessl
link.
!
‘…..it is a fantastic
opportunity for your estate to be represented in this top class
restaurant.’
Isa Bal - chief
sommelier ‘The Fat Duck’

Best results for
WEINRIEDER
The Poysdorfer wine
estate is being awarded top marks in leading international wine
magazines. Even film stars in Beverly Hills choose Weinrieder wines from
the Weinviertel.
In the USA ’Wine
Spectator’ and ’Wine Enthusiast’ and in Great Britain ’Decanter’ subjected
Weinrieder’s latest range to a profound professional tasting and awarded
it top marks. The English language media are read worldwide and are
considered opinion leaders in professional circles. A producer who is
awarded more than 90 points in the ‘Wine Spectator’ journal has basically
sold his entire stock. Here Weinrieder scored with 92 points! ‘Decanter’
pointed its readers specifically towards the estate with its excellent
Riesling, Veltliner and the Welschriesling Eiswein. Following a
professional visit to the estate from the magazine ’Wine Enthusiast’
Weinrieder achieved fantastic marks. Eight of his wines were awarded the
hard-to-reach 90 point mark or higher. The Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben,
produced in a vineyard which is 50 years old, was especially highly rated
- with 93 points; and the Eiswein Riesling Schneiderberg 2003 , with 95
points, even surpassed the top mark achieved by sweet wine expert Alois
Kracher .
‘You cannot value a good
performance in the leading magazines too highly, because sommeliers, top
restaurants and the best vinotheques use them as a guideline’ - Friedrich
Rieder knows this from his own experience. After all, his wines are now
on the wine list of the famous SPAGO restaurant in the upmarket area
Beverly Hills.

Weinrieder goes to
Hollywood
Leap onto the wine list
of the celebrity restaurant Spago
The Poysdorfer vintner
Weinrieder has succeeded in making a huge leap forward in his attack on
the export market. For some time he has been trying to get into the US
market. Now his wines Grüner Veltliner - Alte Reben 2003 and Riesling,
Lage Bockgärten II (2002) have been chosen to appear on the wine list of
the top restaurant Spago in Beverly Hills.
“This significant leap
was made possible after a few exclusive tastings in San Francisco and New
York” are Friedrich Rieder’s joyful comments. The successful Weinviertler
vintner is certain that this will be an enormous help in his attempts to
conquer the American wine market.
The ‘Spago’ Restaurant
was founded by the top chef Wolfgang Puck from Carinthia who is considered
to be the second best known Austrian in the USA after Arnold
Schwarzenegger. He became world famous through the gala dinner for
Hollywood stars after the annual Oscar ceremony. Weinrieder is hoping
that his presence in ‘Spago’ will lead to important new contacts in the
prestigious US market.
