An Estate between Dream and Reality

 

The Weinrieder Estate Kleinhadersdorf near Poysdorf produces both top quality dry whites and premium wines to dream about.

 

When Friedrich Rieder took over the running of the estate he took some important decisions.  The 12 hectares of vineyards are now exclusively dedicated to growing white wines and the production done in a ‘natural’ way.  Only four grape varieties are grown:  Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, Riesling and Chardonnay. The yield is strictly limited through thinning out and is between 2000 and 3000 litres per hectare.  The reputation of the estate is based on the careful handling of the grapes during pressing and the cool fermentation in steel vats, without any addition of sugar.  National and international awards have helped to make the estate known as “Weinrieder” – a term which has come to be synonymous with “High Quality”.  To ensure a continuing high quality, Friedrich Rieder regularly accepts invitations to international tastings where his wines are in competition with those of other top wine growers.Rieder describes the policy for the brand with this oft-repeated statement:”Whoever wants to play in the Premier League in winegrowing needs to be compared with the best  His success in selling 50% of his yield abroad is proof that this is the right way forward.  An annual walk through the well-known Poysdorf vineyards Hohenleiten and Schneiderberg in September  has become a popular excursion in the calendar for many of his customers.  On this occasion, the whole family looks after their guests.  Friedrich Rieder leads the walk through the vineyards and cellars and presents the latest tastings.  His wife Melanie, the heart of it all, takes care of ‘the inner man’. Schoolboy twins Patrick and Lucas and student of tourism Bernhard prove with their committed help that the WEINRIEDER estate has a dynamic future.
